Is Your Website Ready for the New Accessibility Regulation?
Digital Accessibility: It Also Applies to Your Hotel
As of June 28, 2025, the European Accessibility Act (EAA) will take effect. This regulation aims to ensure that specific digital products and services are accessible to people with disabilities.
The EAA also applies to SMEs under the "e-commerce" category. So, if your hotel has more than 10 employees or an annual turnover exceeding €2 million, you are required to make your website compliant with the new accessibility standards.
Thanks to our deep expertise in the hospitality sector and specialized training in digital accessibility, we can design a website that is fully compliant, inclusive, and easy to use for everyone.
The EAA in Short
-
The European Accessibility Act (EU Directive 2019/882) will take effect on June 28, 2025, and was transposed into Italian law through Legislative Decree no. 82/2022.
-
The EAA refers to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The applicable version is WCAG 2.1, Level AA, which includes over 50 criteria covering semantic structure, color contrast, interactivity, document accessibility, keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, and much more.
-
In Italy, the Agency for Digital Italy (AgID) is the official body responsible for oversight and enforcement, with the power to impose penalties for non-compliance.
Digital Accessibility: What’s at Stake
Accessibility is still underestimated by many web agencies—often seen as an optional feature rather than a legal, ethical, and strategic requirement. Yet, more than 20% of the population lives with some form of disability. Having an accessible website means reaching a wider audience and increasing direct bookings.
There is also a common misconception that simply installing an accessibility overlay (such as a plugin or widget) is enough to comply with the regulation.
⚠️ Important Note
These tools do not guarantee compliance and should not be used as a substitute for properly designing a site in accordance with WCAG guidelines. They’re often quick and inexpensive fixes—but largely ineffective and, in some cases, even harmful to the user experience!
